Though there are plenty who worship one Entity or another as a deity I would not say any of them truly are such. They are manifestations of fears. True and unbridled fears. With that said, Jon and I do serve one of these Entities. Specifically, the Beholding. There are others, of course.

Gertrude, his predecessor, was my Archivist before him. Jurgen was rather exposed to the supernatural and therefore wrote books about it. He was not an avatar nor a follower of any of the Entities.

Why hand the position to someone so clearly reluctant to utilise his powers to their fullest?

For my purposes it was actually better this way. He trusted me when I needed him to do so. To your second point, that reluctance actually makes him perfect for the position.

Consider the Eye to revolve around knowledge. Being seen. Being known. The fear of all that. Jon possesses the power to gather that information. One could say I possess the power to already know information. I can reach out and be aware of information around me at my will.

I think the phrasing you are looking for is "if I were to attempt to kill him" actually. He is very difficult to put an end to due to his willing ties to the Beholding. But, I will not stop your attempts to do so. It doesn't bother me.
